Mortgage Banking Bound: Bridging the Gap Between Students and Employers
Ever since I first heard about it, I've been really excited about the Mortgage Bankers Association's "Mortgage Banking Bound" program. On the April 27 broadcast of my Lykken on Lending radio show, I finally got the opportunity to discuss the initiative with Jeff Schummer and Brendan Berry of the MBA. What this program is doing to bring new life to the industry will, I believe, work wonders for the future in our field.
Partnering with a growing number of colleges on the east coast, the MBA is offering an extensive introduction to working in the mortgage industry. Taught by certified mortgage bankers, these Webinars walk students through a career in the mortgage industry—including everything from loan production to investor relations to compliance. So far, there seems to be a high interest in the program from local companies—especially those offering internships.
Here's the thing: Talented people aren't just naturally going to stumble into the mortgage industry—we're going to have to go out and get them. For a variety of reasons, the intelligent Millennials who are now graduating college might often have negative feelings about the industry—because they don't really understand it. "Mortgage Banking Bound" shows students what the industry's really like—and how great it can be to be a part of it. The more programs we have like this, the better of we're going to be.
