Robert G. Wilmers, the Chairman and CEO of M&T Bank Corp.
, passed away at his New York City home on Saturday night. He was 83 years old, and the cause of death was not disclosed.
Wilmers was a Financial Official in New York Mayor John Lindsay’s administration during the 1960s and was an Executive at Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. before taking the leadership reins at M&T in May 1983. Under his leadership, the bank’s asset base grew from $2 billion in 1983 to its current $120 billion level, and M&T spread its branch network to nearly 800 locations across the East Coast through a series of asset and branch acquisitions.
Outside of M&T, Wilmers served as a Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1993 to 1998, as Chairman of the New York State Bankers Association in 2002, and as Chairman of the Empire State Development Corp. from 2008 to 2009.
