Robert Klein, the Founder and Chairman for Cleveland-based mortgage field service company Safeguard Properties, passed away yesterday at the age of 65.

Klein started Safeguard Properties in 1990 with two employees in a basement office. He originally began his career as the owner of a taxi business, but he saw little difference in the basic operating success strategy in running a business.

“Whether it's a taxi business, a produce business, or a field services company, to be the best, you have to get to know your clients, understand their challenges, and find ways to solve their problems, sometimes even before they know they have a problem,” Klein said.

Klein was also founder and chairman of SecureView, a supplier of clearboarding polycarbonate material, and chairman of RIK Enterprises, an investment firm. During his career, Klein served as chairman of the National Vacant Properties Registration Committee of the Mortgage Bankers Association.
