Former Mr. Cooper president succeeds Rick Thornberry as Radian completes its shift toward mortgage and specialty insurance

Radian Group Inc. has named longtime mortgage and consumer-finance executive Mike Weinbach its chief executive officer, completing a leadership transition first announced in May.

Weinbach assumed the role Thursday and joined Radian’s board of directors. He succeeds Rick Thornberry, who led the mortgage insurer for nine years and will remain with the company as a strategic adviser until his retirement Dec. 31.

“Mike is an accomplished leader whose experience, strategic judgment, and deep financial services expertise make him well suited to lead Radian through this next phase of growth,” Howard Culang, non-executive chairperson of Radian’s board, said in the announcement.

Weinbach arrives at Radian after serving as president of Mr. Cooper Group, where he helped lead the mortgage servicer through its 2025 acquisition by Rocket Companies. He also oversaw technology initiatives and the growth of Mr. Cooper’s servicing and origination portfolios.

Before joining Mr. Cooper, Weinbach served as CEO of consumer lending at Wells Fargo, overseeing home, auto, student, and personal lending, as well as credit cards and merchant services. He led more than 40,000 employees and served on the bank’s operating committee.

Weinbach previously spent 16 years at JPMorgan Chase, ultimately becoming CEO of Chase Home Lending. He began his career as a mergers and acquisitions investment banker at Citigroup.

“It is an honor to join Radian at such a pivotal and promising moment,” Weinbach said. “My confidence in the company’s future has only grown as I have spent time with our talented team and seen firsthand our differentiated approach to delivering value for customers, stockholders, and other stakeholders.”

The transition comes during a substantial change in Radian’s business mix. The company completed its acquisition of Lloyd’s specialty insurer Inigo Limited on Feb. 2, adding a global specialty-insurance operation alongside its established U.S. mortgage-insurance business.

Radian has also exited businesses it considered outside that strategy. The company stopped accepting new business through Radian Mortgage Capital in March and began winding down the mortgage conduit as part of a broader retreat from title, real estate services, and other non-core operations.

Weinbach therefore inherits a more concentrated company than his predecessor led, but one that now stretches beyond mortgage insurance. Radian is positioning its mortgage and specialty-insurance divisions as the foundation of its long-term growth strategy.

“Thanks to the vision and dedicated work of Rick Thornberry and the entire Radian team, I believe the company is exceptionally well-positioned for what lies ahead,” Weinbach said. “I am excited to build on that strong foundation.”
