Ferguson has a remarkable record of public service and private sector success, having served as the former vice chairman of the board of governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve System and as the CEO and president of TIAA, a leading provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical, and cultural fields, according to a Blend blog post.

With a J.D. and a Ph.D. from Harvard, Ferguson spent his early career practicing law on Wall Street and providing strategic advice and consulting at McKinsey before being named as vice chair of the Federal Reserve, where he served from 1997 to 2006, according to the post. He led the Fed’s response to the 9/11 attacks.

After serving on the Federal Reserve board of governors, he returned to the private sector, where he was head of financial services for Swiss Re before becoming the CEO of TIAA, where he served for more than 13 years. At TIAA, Ferguson oversaw the delivery of essential financial services to TIAA’s customers, which include many of the country’s educators.
