FHFA Director Sandra Thompson To Resign On Eve Of Trump Inauguration

Jan 10, 2025

Thompson’s departure clears the way for Trump appointee to take over

Sandra Thompson, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), announced she will be resigning effective January 19, in advance of President-elect Trump's inauguration on January 20.

Thompson has led the FHFA since June 2021, initially in an acting capacity after President Joe Biden dismissed former Trump appointee Mark Calabria.

Her departure comes amid growing uncertainty over the future of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) regulated by the FHFA, which have been under federal conservatorship for more than 16 years.

The incoming Trump administration is expected to prioritize efforts to release the companies from government oversight, aligning with its broader agenda to reduce federal involvement in housing finance.

Trump has not yet named a successor to Thompson, but industry sources suggest Mark Calabria could return as FHFA director.
