NAR's Chief Legal Officer Steps Down
Katie Johnson led the association's legal team for 10 years
Katie Johnson is stepping down from her role as chief legal officer for the National Association of Realtors (NAR) after spending 17 years at the organization. Johnson has also been serving as NAR’s chief membership experience officer simultaneously since March 2023.
Johnson, previously the trade group's associate counsel, succeeded Laurie Janik in 2014 as NAR's general counsel following Janik's retirement. Johnson navigated the association's legal department through the organization's multiple antitrust lawsuits, sexual harassment scandals, and the recent NAR settlement in August. According to NAR's 2022 tax filings, Johnson was paid $1.02 million for working, on average, 50 hours per week.
A NAR spokesperson confirmed in an emailed statement sent to NMP that Johnson is stepping down "after 17 years of dedicated service to NAR."
"Having joined NAR in 2007, Katie has spent the bulk of her career committed to fulfilling NAR’s mission to make homeownership a reality for all Americans," the NAR spokesperson said. "We are grateful for her service. As we make this transition, our priority is ensuring business continuity and remaining laser-focused on shepherding NAR through this time of significant industry change.”
NAR has not responded to NMP's follow-up questions asking why Johnson chose to step down or who will replace her. The article will be updated if NAR responds.
NMP also reached out to Johnson via LinkedIn, though she did not immediately respond.
