Move aims to boost broker retention, borrower experience

United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM), the nation’s largest mortgage lender, has signed a long-term agreement to license ICE Mortgage Technology’s MSP loan servicing system — a strategic move to bring its mortgage servicing operations in-house and enhance support for its broker network.

The deal, announced by Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), marks a significant shift in UWM’s operational model, empowering the lender to manage servicing directly rather than outsourcing the function. By deploying ICE’s technology, UWM plans to offer a more seamless and personalized experience to homeowners while boosting borrower retention and increasing repeat and referral business for its wholesale brokers.

“This is a huge win for UWM and, more importantly, the broker community,” said UWM Chairman, President, and CEO, Mat Ishbia. “This will mean a better experience for borrowers and a stronger, stickier relationship with their brokers ... We’re excited about the cost savings, but even more so about helping brokers deepen relationships with their clients.”

UWM will implement several ICE solutions alongside MSP, including the Servicing Digital borrower portal, ICE Loss Mitigation, Customer Service tools, Automated Lien Release, and Servicing APIs. These tools will allow UWM to streamline lien management, support homeowners in hardship, and integrate servicing with the lender’s broader tech stack for operational efficiency, according to the company.

The partnership is a vote of confidence in ICE’s status as a neutral third-party technology provider in the mortgage space — a distinction that ICE executives say positions them to serve lenders and servicers without conflict.

“Our solutions simplify every stage of the loan lifecycle,” stated Tim Bowler, president of ICE Mortgage Technology, in a release. “As a neutral provider of third-party software, lenders and servicers can rest assured that we will always be in their corner.”

Based in Pontiac, Michigan, UWM is the largest wholesale and purchase mortgage lender in the U.S., operating exclusively through independent mortgage brokers. The company has topped the wholesale lending space for 10 consecutive years.
