MISMO, VA Push To Digitize Veteran Loan Eligibility Process
New data standards aim to streamline Certificate of Eligibility requests, reduce manual processing and speed VA loan originations
MISMO has released new standardized data mappings designed to help lenders process VA loan eligibility requests more efficiently as part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' ongoing digital transformation of its Loan Guaranty program.
Developed in collaboration with the VA, the new specifications standardize the electronic exchange of information for the Request for Certificate of Eligibility (VA Form 26-1880) and the Request for Determination of Loan Guaranty Eligibility – Unmarried Surviving Spouses (VA Form 26-1817).
The standards are intended to replace portions of the document-driven process that have traditionally required manual data entry, document review, and interpretation. According to MISMO, the mappings support machine-readable data exchange for key eligibility information, including military service details, prior VA loan usage, and entitlement purpose.
For lenders, the changes could help reduce rekeying, improve consistency across systems, and shorten the time needed to validate borrower eligibility.
"These new data mappings represent a significant step forward in the VA's Loan Guaranty digital transformation," said Brian Vieaux, president of MISMO. "By working closely with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and our industry partners, MISMO is helping to provide more consistent outcomes for the veterans and surviving spouses these programs are designed to serve."
The specifications were developed by the MISMO VA Documents to Data Development Workgroup in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs and have achieved Candidate Recommendation status, indicating they have reached broad industry consensus and are considered ready for implementation.
MISMO is encouraging lenders that originate VA loans, along with the technology providers that support them, to begin implementing the new mappings with their trading partners.
The release is part of a broader industry push to digitize mortgage origination workflows through standardized data exchange, reducing reliance on paper documents while improving efficiency and consistency throughout the lending process.
